> working alone and really need someone to bounce ideas off of, someone to motivate you once in a while or give you fun assignments that you miss from school to get creative juices flowing again.
> missing out on something because you are so far removed from the things you accomplished in school that you really could use a coach to help bring the joy back into my routine and work/life balance.
> wanting to improve skills like type affinity, se of color, risk-taking, or just projects that you can't do because you're in-house or don't have the type of clients for that work.
> realizing that College isn't or wasn't for me. You prefer to work at your own pace or in an environment that is not in a large institution (especially in a pandemic).
> in an associated field and want to broaden your skill set to include graphic design for my own purposes or for my current employment.
> a non-traditional student of any age - from high school and beyond - looking for a comprehensive program that I can do remotely but with a coach to guide me?
The most important aspect of this process is an assessment and a conversation about your background and goals. Once we have an initial consultation and I'm able to review your work, I'll provide feedback on what I see as your strengths and weaknesses with a suggested program plan for your time and budget.
If you are starting from the beginning, you may be interested in my comprehensive program where I've condensed numerous semesters into 5 courses that will give you a foundation in design and expand your skill set into advanced and complex problem-solving.
You may decide you want a small in-person opportunity that is a contrast to the traditional environment of higher education. This would be a low enrollment of maximum 10 people at any one time in a rural setting at my creative retreat center in Tennessee.
If you would prefer a completely customized program that lasts 6 to 12 months, this starts with that first conversation and meetings established for video conferencing. Assignments will be provided based on your specific needs and goals.
Some of the areas typically people need to focus on:
concept development and exhibiting design process
typography and use of color
type and image
a broader array of artifact type OR a narrowing down of artifact / style for a specific market you want to work in.
SET UP AN INITIAL FREE CONSULTATION BY COMPLETING THE REGISTRATION FORM BELOW. IF YOU HAVE DONE ANY DESIGN WORK PRIOR TO THIS, PLEASE INCLUDE A LINK TO A WEBSITE PORTFOLIO OR WE CAN EMAIL SHARE THE LINKS.
OPTIONS MAY INCLUDE
A MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM 6 OR 12 Months:
Based on the evaluation of your work, if you have any, and our conversation of your goals and workflow, you may opt to work with me over a period of 6 or 12 months. This would entail a customized plan of study that we would review prior to embarking on the journey. The rate will be based on how many meetings we have, the complexity of the assignments, among other facets.
In my career span of more than 20 years, I have been connected to the design industry on a leadership level and attending workshops and conferences. I pride myself on innovating interesting assignments that are practical and unique rather than what I see in many programs across the country that are still stuck in curriculum they designed a decade, two decades or longer with resistance or lack of interest in updating.
Please consider that if enrolled in a traditional college program, your design courses will range from 5 to 10 requirements. Bachelor's degrees require 120 credits. 10 courses is 30 credits or approximately 1/4 of your total program which would entail general education and other requirements unique to each institution. Imagine if you could pay less than 1 year's worth of tuition to have a private coach and complete a comprehensive course load comparative to the majority of the requirements in a graphic design major?
For students interested in this program you will start with Wonder 101, move to Wander 101, then engage in Design Concepts, move on to discovering how to be a Citizen Designer which includes a bit of history lessons, and close out the courses with a Brand class for creating your own brand and portfolio along with other brand exercises. You may opt to add additional innovative coursework in remote or in socially distanced appropriate in person workshops - such as TASTE which is a combination of graphic design, writing, art, and gardening, cooking, even pottery. Additional assignments could include package design, design history, research and writing, advanced typography.
This is a consultation and coaching option that will be customized based on your learning style and your basic goals for improving your work based on the assessment. Not ready to make a 6 or 12 month commitment, let's see what we can accomplish on a monthly basis.
This could include a bonus component to the existing courses below..
Includes initial consultation and two 1hr sessions a week (or a 2 hr session)
for 4 weeks consecutive
(unless tech or personal issues on either end require us to extend briefly)
Includes initial consultation and approximately 2 hrs per week of video,
phone and email conversations for 8 weeks. May accrue time and schedule on a weekly basis as needed. Must complete within 8 weeks, or agree to a 2 or 4 week extension.
Additional time/ special rate: $40/hr
You have a pressing need and specific project you want to tackle. Maybe you are working on a new project at your work, starting an internship that requires you to do more graphic design, or are a creative in other fields and would prefer a one-on-one consultation as needed to achieve your goals. This option is based on what you may be working on at the time with additional projects or recommendations as they arise in the conversations.
